Thaer al Rajabi, 9, wears a Palestinian flag as a cape while playing on the rooftop where his father, Kayed al Rajabi, set up an inflatable pool to make up for a missed vacation by the sea after Ramadan. “There was too much fear for us to leave our house,” says the 34-year-old father of eight. “So I brought them this pool.” The Palestinian family faces possible eviction from their home in the Silwan district of East Jerusalem because an Israeli settler organization sued, claiming the land had been owned by a Jewish trust more than a century ago. The United Nations estimates that 970 Palestinians in the city are threatened with eviction due to cases brought mainly by settler organizations.</image:caption>

A study from USC Berkeley says Aida Refugee camp in Bethlehem most exposed to tear gas in the world. Due to tear gas, Um Ahmad has had two miscarriages and an induced abortion. She was four months pregnant when in January 2015 a tear gas canister entered her house. She hid inside the bathroom to avoid the tear gas, but was still asphyxiated by it and almost lost consciousness. She was taken in a taxi to al-Hussein hospital in the nearby town of Beit Jala. Following advice from several doctors, she decided to have an induced abortion as the health of the fetus was abnormal. She expressed her fears to Amnesty International about being pregnant while living in Aida refugee camp.“I am pregnant again, but I don’t like pregnancy. I am now afraid of having an unhealthy child. Not that it is unfair for me, but it’s unfair on the child. But what should we do? Not have children?… Hopefully God will make up for the ones that were lost. We will never stop having children, even if we get tear gassed every day."</image:caption>

As Gazan refugees, they do not have same rights as majority of West Bank refugees. They take a portrait, hiding their face, so they can speak honestly, afraid to publicly criticize Jordan. Nada and Sanaa worry about the future of their children. They complain about UNRWA schools, which provide education for Palestinian refugees until grade 10 (that is, until around 15 years). They say that their children’s classrooms are overcrowded. Each classroom has 45 to 55 students per teacher. Sanaa explained the educational challenges facing her daughter, who is in grade seven (for children aged around 12 years):“My daughter has no fixed classroom. They move the students from one room to another depending on the availability of rooms. They call her classroom the ‘flying classroom’. She and her classmates keep running from one floor to the other.”Sanaa, 33, is a teacher and mother of six children. “I have no health insurance and they can lay me off at any moment. If I had a national [identity] number, I would have enjoyed all labour protections and my children would have health insurance.”“My child had whooping cough. I took him immediately to a public hospital. His condition was very bad and I wanted to admit him to the hospital. But the doctor gave him medicine and sent us back home. At night, his condition deteriorated. He couldn’t breathe. I took him again to the hospital but this time with the birth certificate of the son of my Jordanian friend. In no time, my child was admitted to the hospital for treatment. A Jordanian birth certificate saved his life.”Nada, 32, is the childhood friend of Sanaa. We waited for so long to see the peace that they have been calling for, but the result is more killings and more checkpoints and more settlements and attacks by settlers on Alaqsa mosque. For 100 euros, foreign visitors have two hours to learn how to defend themselves against “terrorists”.Provided by former IDF soldiers, counter-terrorism training for foreigners is on the increase. "Line up!" Avoid taking your weapon like a guitar, point it at the ground. When you're ready, raise it up, aim and shoot. Obediently, the participants do so under the watchful eye of the instructor. With the butt wedged against the shoulder, each shouts "ech ech ech" (fire, in Hebrew) to parody the shot. On this August afternoon, about 20 of them participated in the "Shooting Adventure" workshop offered by Caliber 3, an Israeli counter-terrorism training center founded in 2002 in Gush Etzion, in the occupied West Bank. He says Palestinians did not factor into the decision-making of settling in the Occupied West Bank.Yossef is a follower of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav, a lighter, more mystical version of Judaism that appears stringent to secular Israelis but is borderline psychedellic to the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim, where he was born and raised. He buys a chicken for the yearly "kaparot" ritual - the passing of one's sins onto a chicken that is ritually killed and is given to the poor for a holiday meal. Yossef loves animals; he always brings home strays, despite orthodox Judaism's ambivalent approach to pets, and normally he donates money to charity directly, but this year he wanted to acquiant his son with the sacrifice. He talks to the chicken, feeds it a children's snack and solemnly wipes its bottom when it defecates on his spotless kitchen floor. He works in real estate and is about to move to a settlement; he's not into politics but says atmosphere there is so much more liberal than in the largely anti-Zionist, ultra-conservative Mea Shearim. The chicken flutters onto his shoulder. He grabs it by the feet, gently spinning the chicken over his sons head while reading the relevant invocation; and walks it off to slaughter.</image:caption>

Aproximately 29 families (145 people, of which 70 percent are minors) live in Zanba. The majority of Bedouin communities in area hold typically conservative roles for the women, but Zanba is unique in how vibrant celebatory and social the women are with outside visitors. <image:caption>“Birds Unaccustomed to Gravity”East Jerusalem, Separation Barrier View of a tree on cusp of separation barrier separating East Jerusalem. Since 2002, a barrier more than 700 kilometres long has scarred the West Bank, hindering social life, economic activities, and access to services.Thousands of Palestinians live in communities that remained between the Barrier and the internationally recognized 1949 Armistice Line (Green Line); they are largely cut off of main cities and other parts of their country.. Farmers in about 150 communities rely on special permissions to access their isolated fields and groves. In Jerusalem, Palestinian neighbourhoods have been divided from each other and walled out from the urban centre. The Barrier is part of a greater system of obstacles that restrict Palestinian movement not only out of the occupied Palestinian territory, but also within it. The Israeli authorities constructed the Barrier with the declared aim of preventing attacks by Palestinians in Israel. However, most of its route is well within the West Bank, rather than on the Green Line.</image:caption>

After returning home from his job as a construction laborer, shortly before the dawn prayer, he collapsed right away onto his bed, dusting the sheets with the debris that fell from his work clothes. Not long after, the shabiha (pro-regime militia) burst into their home and shot him, execution style, in the head. He had barely woken up. When Fadia’s little brother wailed in fear, the guns were turned on him. Fadia screamed, “Kill me instead!” Both were spared. She now lives with her aunt on the outskirts of Amman in a crowded one-bedroom apartment with fifteen extended family members. Jordan, 2012, "Aysha", 30, has been widowed for one year after 11 years of marriage to her husband, who was a fighter for the Free Syrian Army. Here, she shows a tattoo on her shoulder that reads, “Why did you leave me when I needed you?” The tattoo relates to a dramatic quarrel the young teens had when secretly dating – upon making up, they each had the tattoo made as a reminder of how horrible it was being apart. Aysha never imagined the tattoo would take on such a dramatically different meaning years later. Aysha, 31, has been widowed for four years after eleven years of marriage to Abu Layla, a fighter in Daraa. Here, she shows a tattoo on her shoulder that reads, “Why did you leave me when I needed you?” It relates to a dramatic quarrel the young teens had when secretly dating – upon making up, they each had the tattoo made as a reminder of how horrible it was being apart. Aysha never imagined the tattoo would take on such a dramatically different meaning years later. Aysha is one of the 654,582 registered Syrian refugees in Jordan living both in designated camps and in the cities, in whatever housing their means will allow. For the women in this chapter, who have lost their husbands to a war for a country to which they cannot return, home is now the martyrs’ wives buildings. The six-floor concrete apartment building, where we met the women photographed here, has a cloth banner imprinted with the words “martyrs’ wives” hung from its roof. The identification leaves the residents exposed and vulnerable, even when intentions are good. In the first year, men approached the apartments asking if the women were available for fun or for marriage; others asked about their daughters. To protect their young girls, many mothers forbid them from attending school after puberty, leaving their daughters trapped, day in and day out, inside rooms with windows framed by ugly curtains. After their father died, their mother was encouraged by her in-laws to remarry to lessen the financial burden on the family. Aysha’s three young daughters are not allowed to live with their mother now, but remain with their grandparents. According to a report by Save the Children, 35 percent of the 4.8 million Syrian refugees in the region are of school age. Whereas before the conflict, 94 percent of Syrians attended primary or lower secondary school, by June 2017, 43 percent of Syrian refugees are now out of school. Many of these include girls living in Jordanian cities, who upon reaching puberty, are kept at home due to fears for their safety and of sexual harassment. Any tarnishing of their reputation may hurt their chances for marriage, which remains for many, the only hope to improve their situations. The women’s fear is rooted in being outsiders in the places in which they have taken refuge. They worry that strangers from another country (not their own) will not protect their daughters; some feel outright preyed upon.</image:caption>

The sadness we carry is taking all of our energy, so I don’t watch the news or keep up with what’s happening in Syria anymore. She had advised him on his wedding night to slap his new wife once, to assert his authority. Despite that abrupt beginning, the marriage had been a happy one until his death. She says that after the nuptials, her mother-in-law brutally beat her, claiming “her son was being too kind to her.” The abuse lasted for six days before Hala returned home. She asked for a divorce, but her husband and his family refused unless she paid back the 3,000 USD they claimed to have paid for the wedding “party” (a humble affair in her apartment), shoes, dress rental, set of gold jewelry, and preparations for her new life.
